Additionally, American Express provided Centurion and Platinum card members an opportunity to screen this film before its release date of Friday, 22nd March 2024. However, NYC got to see it first on 14th March 2024. Now that’s a nice tribute to Empire NYC! Warning: Spoiler Alert
Ghostbusters Frozen Empire
Next Generation
Gil Kenan and Jason Reitman co-wrote, with Kenan directing . So the franchise continues with another Reitman taking over for the legendary Ivan Reitman, who ‘unexpectedly‘ died in his sleep. The junior Reitman does his father proud with the latest instalment of the Spengler family. The patriarch Egon Spengler appeared as an apparition in Ghostbusters Afterlife, although he does not reemerge in this sequel. Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd and Ernie Hudson return to reprise their roles. Annie Potts also appears in cameo.
In many respects, Ghostbusters Frozen Empire NYC sequel doesn’t feel like a sequel. It feels like a next chapter story in the life of the Spengler family with a new generation at the helm. This includes 15 year old Phoebe Spengler, who is the protagonist. McKenna Grace (Phoebe) has a character arc that is more prominent than any of the other actors. That’s because her ‘transformation’ is key to the ‘set up’ and eventual conclusion.
The Movie
The first scene sets the tone for the rest of the film. The Spengler family is once again chasing down ‘the threat’ in the Ecto-1 but this time in NYC. Meanwhile, Phoebe is in the extendable gunner seat ready to proton blast ‘the threat’. This mayhem causes a lot of damage to city property, which gets the ire of the city bureaucrat (Walter Peck).
Walter Peck (William Atherton) grounds Phoebe because she is too young for such dangerous work. Thus this chain of events starts her arc of ‘discontent’. She later befriends a pyromania ghost named Melody (Emily Alyn Lind) who can’t move on. Melody wants to see her family, whom she accidentally killed in a fire she started. Moreover, she has a ‘hidden agenda’ that threatens Phoebe, her family and humanity.
The film starts in NYC, with no explanation of how the Spengler family got there. They took up residence in the firehouse made iconic in the original Ghostbuster films. The 1984 debut of Ghostbusters was a run away hit. The 1989 sequel also held its own. It’s too early to tell how well Ghostbusters Frozen Empire will fare in comparison. Critics have already proton blasted the film.
Ghostbusters Frozen Empire Cameos
The 1984 Ghostbusters introduced the world to the gigantic Stay Puft Marshmallow Man. The fan-favourite Mini-Pufts appeared in Ghostbusters Afterlife. Moreover, they are back in Ghostbusters Frozen Empire! Stayed tuned for more mayhem during the ending credits of the film.
Slimer (The Green Ghost) is back! Unbeknownst to the Spengler family, it’s been residing in the attic of the firehouse. Moreover, Trevor (Finn Wolfard) devised a way to trap it, with Slimer’s favourite snack! That’s because Slimer is a junk food addict! Slimer first appeared in 1984 Ghostbusters.
